Companies struggle to correct faulty Wikipedia entries

What do you usually do to find information about something you don’t know? Almost all who have a bit knowledge about internet will find all those information from wikipedia.  If you do so don’t really trust on the information provided in wikepedia. Recent research has suggested that 6 out of 10 informations given in wikepedia contain some errors. Well, bang goes the lazy journalist's version of research: a survey has found that a whacking 60 percent of Wikipedia articles about companies contain factual errors.
Some have been very entertaining indeed: the edit which depicted Microsoft founder Bill Gates as a devil, for example, or the one which - some would say accurately - described Bernie Madoff as 'a very clever asshole who stole shitloads of money'.

But, says the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which has carried out a survey of 1,284 public relations professionals; it's making their lives very difficult.
When respondents tried to engage editors through Wikipedia's 'Talk' pages to request factual corrections, 12 percent said it took weeks to get a response - and a quarter never heard back at all.
Only 35 percent actually got any response, either through the Talk pages or by directly editing of a client's entry.
Of those who were familiar with the process of editing Wikipedia entries, 23 percent said making changes was 'near impossible', and 29 percent said their interactions with Wikipedia editors were 'never productive'.
The PRSA says it's also discovered that PR people barely understand Wikipedia's rules for editing.
"It does not surprise me that so many Wikipedia entries contain factual errors. What is surprising, however, is that 25 percent of survey respondents indicated they are not familiar with the Wikipedia articles for their company or clients," says Marcia DiStaso, co-chair of PRSA's National Research Committee and an assistant professor  at Penn State University.
"At some point most, if not all, companies will determine they need to change something in their Wikipedia entries. Without clear, consistent rules from Wikipedia regarding how factual corrections can be made this will be a very difficult learning process for public relations professionals."

Windows 8 will come in three flavors

Here are some more details about Microsoft's next-generation operating system.
First up, Microsoft is now officially confirming that the name of the platform will indeed be Windows 8. Those days of coming up with something cool like "XP" or "Vista" are apparently over.
In addition, the software giant noted that Windows 8 will be available in three editions. There will be just standard, vanilla Windows 8 as well as Windows 8 Pro, for advanced users and high-end business accounts.
In addition, as has previously been confirmed, there will be an edition of the platform exclusively for tablet devices.

The most distinct aspect of Windows 8 is what's known as the "Metro UI," which allows users to have complete customization on their home page, including widgets, RSS readers, weather information, date/time, etc.
In addition, since this is such a revolutionary new platform, Microsoft wants to scrap out all remnants of the "old-school" look and feel. Instead of a Start bar, hovering your mouse over that corner of the screen will allow you to swap between the Metro UI and the traditional desktop. For the mobile version of Windows 8, the Metro UI will be the default interface.
The inclusion of only three versions may seem like a step back. Windows 7 was available in six SKUs - Home Basic, Starter Edition, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate.
It looks like Microsoft will be keeping things simple and elegant this time.

The video game that even BLIND people can play... and it was designed by a ten-year-old for his disabled grandmother

A 10-year-old Californian schoolboy has created a computer game for his blind grandmother so they can play together.
Dylan Viale, a fifth-grader at Hidden Valley Elementary in Martinez, created the game called Quacky’s Quest as part of a school science project.
He then decided to enter the game in his school science fair - and won first place. He now hopes to become a game designer when he leaves school.
'Dylan wanted to figure out a way that he could share his love for video games with her,' Dylan's father, Dino Viale, told computer game blog Kotaku.
'He thought, "How can I create something she can enjoy?''
He then downloaded GameMaker, a software that lets people write their own games easily.
He decided to create a maze game in which players move Quacky, a duck character that Dylan has drawn since he was in elementary school.
Dylan Viale
As Quacky, the goal is to navigate through a series of mazes and find a Golden Egg. To ensure his grandmother could play, he decided the sounds would be key.
'Sound was the greatest tool for [Dylan's] grandmother to navigate through the game,' Dino said. 'He had to figure out how to associate each move through the maze with sound cues for whether you were doing something correctly or incorrectly.'
The game uses a maze similar to pacman, with each object having a different sounds. When players hit a wall, for instance, they hear a low noise, while jewels produce a ‘cha ching’ sound.
The game also features giant spiders - if player go the wrong way down a passage, they start hearing spider noises.
However, after testing the game with his grandmother, he found it needed more work to ensure she did not go backwards - so he added a feature dropping a boulder behind the duck as it moved around the maze, 'If you tried to go backwards, it would make the negative sound of hitting a boulder or a wall,' Dino said.
'Once that happened, [Sherry] was really able to fly through the maze quite quickly,' he said.

Anonymous plans to hack UK intelligence agency's website

Have you heard about the group of some computer genius called Anonymous ?If not now this group is going to do something that haven’t had happened before.Notorious Internet hacking group Anonymous issued a warning that they had planned to take down the website of the UK intelligence agency, Government Communications Headquarters (GHCQ).
"#Anonymous Next DDOS attack is on GCHQ.gov.uk Sat 14th April...WE MUST CONTINUE TO FIGHT," a message posted on twitter from one of the accounts associated with Anonymous read.
According to Sky News, the group claims to be protesting about proposals to tighten Internet surveillance regulations.

GCHQ is British Government's Communications Headquarters based in Cheltenham.
It is a highly secretive organization, which works closely with both the Security Service (MI5) and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).
According to the report, last weekend, followers of the same organisation successfully shut down the website of the UK Home Office for a number of hours, to protest against the UK's extradition deal with the United States

Beware of the fake Android version of Angry Birds Space

Are you Crazy about games and love to download the newest version of  Angry Birds Space? If Yes then you have to be wary as  the latest version of the popular Angry Birds game, Angry Bird Space  which was released on March 22 for download  was downloaded over 10 million times in just three days. Taking advantage of its overwhelming popularity, Android malware authors have come up with a fake version of the Angry Birds Space containing “Trojan horse” virus.

Security experts Graham Cluley, an analyst with Web security firm Sophos, recently posted a blog stating that they had discovered fake versions of the game on unofficial app stores. The fake games which contains a “Trojan horse” virus, in a in a file called Andr/KongFu-L, appears to be a fully functional version of the game. It installs a virus on the user’s smartphone or tablet, and then the code tries to install more malware that makes the phone or tablet computer vulnerable to cybercriminals.
“It feels like we have to keep reminding Android users to be on their guard against malware risks, and to be very careful, especially when downloading applications from unofficial Android markets,” Cluley said.
Rovio also warned Android users about this fake infected version of the game in a post on the official blog, and urged them to download the new title from their official store.
If you don’t have the new Angry Birds Space game on your Android smartphone yet, then you can download the original version of the game from the Rovio store here.

Windows XP's will no more remain as Operating system

Do you have Window XP Operating System in your PC or Note Book , If yes its time to change it as Microsoft's more-than-a-decade-old operating system will officially be cut from life support and will no longer be supported by the company....in two years.
Okay, so it isn't the most radical move we've ever seen, but it looks like this time, Microsoft won't change its mind and end up extending the support deadline.
The software giant confirmed in a blog post that as of April 8, 2014, the XP platform will no longer receive Microsoft's official support. The same goes for Office 2003.
The operating system, now more than a decade old, was still grasping a majority of the PC market last year, but the newest numbers show that as of December, its market share is now only 46.5%.

That's still more than any other operating system, of course, but it is no longer thriving on more than half of the entire computer market.
And that number has been declining at a rate previously unseen. In 2011, Windows XP lost more than 10 market share percentage points. Consumers are finally upgrading to Windows 7 after the disaster that was Windows Vista, leaving many to cling to the known quantity of XP.
Without a doubt the most significant base that is driving this shift is the enterprise market. For companies and organizations that own hundreds, or even thousands, of computers, upgrading is not an easy or affordable process.
But Microsoft is now finally ending support for XP users, and Windows 7 is much more user-friendly and upgrade-worthy than its predecessors.

New iPad will go on sale at exactly 8 AM Friday

Those who weren't quick enough to pre-order their new iPad online have one last resort.

That would be going to an Apple Store on the actual release date this Friday. And now, the company has confirmed exactly what time the device will go on sale at every location chainwide. The metaphorical vault will open at 8:00 AM local time. That means people in Eastern Australia technically get the first crack at it, as the time zones cascade and the units begin selling in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe, and the US.

The new iPad, which is officially just being referred to as the "iPad" even though many still call it the iPad 3, boasts an amazing new display along with 4G LTE connectivity. Beyond that, though, there isn't a whole lot of change from the iPad 2. Many are disappointed that this is merely an incremental upgrade, in much the same way that the iPhone 3GS was just a minor update to the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4S didn't really differ much from the iPhone 4.
It is for that reason that Apple likely doesn't even want to call the new device the iPad 3. The company is under pressure to release product updates every year, when in reality it takes multiple years to actually advance the technology significantly. So, the new iPad will sell like gangbusters just because it's from Apple and it can be described as being "new." But expect the next iteration of the tablet to be the one that is actually new and interesting.

Facebook launches Messenger for Windows

Here is something that can make you even more addicted to Facebook. The social networking giant, Facebook, has now officially launched Facebook  Messenger for Windows, which is a standalone app that lets you IM friends via Windows 7.
The newly introduced app lets you chat, receive notifications, and read your news feed from your desktop. In other words, the messenger lets you use Facebook without being on www.facebook.com. However, missing elements from the app are video chat (through Skype) and group chat, which are there inside its web interface.
Facebook has been testing this application since November, but an Israeli blog TechIT had leaked the download link in December, following which Facebook responded by making it publicly available. However, that was a test. It cannot be denied that Facebook is in the habit of testing its products on small percentage of its users before rolling it out, officially.
But now Facebook has officially announced to roll out this application. If you don't come across any "download" button yet, you need not worry as the app will be rolled out to users’ profiles over the next few weeks.
Facebook messenger

However, if you are eager and can not wait, you can download the application - Facebook Messenger for Windows 7 - from here If you use Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac or another operating system, you won't be able to install the app at this time, reported Facebok on its page, adding "we're working on making the app available for more operating systems."
According to Facebook, it is currently working on a version of this app for Windows Vista. The app does not do not currently support Windows XP.
Reportedly, a Mac version is on the way, but the company has not said anything as to when that version will be out.
Earlier, Facebook introduced the Android and iOS-based mobile Messenger app last August.

Toshiba introduces 'world's thinnest tablet'

Toshiba will begin shipping its newest tablet, the Excite LE, next week.
And in a market where every tablet absolutely has to be differentiated or it simply will not stand out, Toshiba claims this one is the thinnest model in the world.
With a 10.1-inch display, it is only 0.3 inches thick. The iPad 2, by comparison, measures in with a thickness of 0.34 inches, so the Excite LE is more than 10% thinner. The question is whether or not that will be enough to attract consumers en masse.
world Thieniset tablet produced by Toshiba
The Excite LE can't compete against the iPad on price. The 16 GB version is set to retail at around $530 while the 32 GB model will go for $600. That means to get the Toshiba tablet, users will need to spend more than an iPad - that is, until the iPad 3 starts putting pressure on retailers to discount the iPad 2. It's expected the iPad 3 could be more expensive than its predecessors.
Toshiba's new tablet comes loaded with the latest version of Android Honeycomb, version 3.2, and offers up to eight hours of battery life. The device comes packed with a 1.2 GHz dual-core Texas Instruments processor, and includes both front and rear cameras.
The 10.1-inch tablet market has been the hardest for anyone to break into, solely because that's the exact same size as the iPad. In the 7-inch world, Amazon has managed to find success with its Kindle Fire.
The Kindle Fire has also proven that when it comes to Android tablets, at least right now, price matters. The average consumer who has enough money to buy an iPad will, frankly, buy an iPad, regardless of how powerful the comparable Android tablets are.
So the Excite LE has a tough battle, especially since Toshiba's previous tablets haven't really been able to break through the competition.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview now available

The final beta of Microsoft's new operating system has been released.
The company chose the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain as the official launch venue. Before this iteration, no one would have thought of a mobile trade show as a place for Windows, but this new platform is a brand new experience with mobile at its core.
In fact, some have criticized the OS as being "too optimized" for the mobile environment, because of features like touch controls that simply won't work on a traditional PC. So Microsoft is working on striking the perfect balance so that it can please the traditional segment and the mobile-centric segment at the same time.
There will be two versions of Windows 8 - one for desktops and one for tablets - but both should function pretty much the same. Things like an app store and highly customizable interfaces will make the new version unlike anything Microsoft has released for a computing product before.
As part of the launch, Nvidia confirmed today that it will be distributing test PC units to developers powered by the Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor. "We're furthering this tradition by helping to realize the extraordinary potential of Windows on ARM processors, like Tegra 3," the company said in a statement.
The beta download is available now, and tips the scales at a little over 3 GB.

Eye-controlled computer games for disabled children

Computer games which can be controlled by eye movements are being developed by researchers at a UK university.
The project at De Montfort University aims to allow severely-disabled youngsters to play computer games.
Learning to control games by eye tracking is also intended to help disabled children navigate real-world environments.
Eye control "adds a whole new level of intelligence to games", says research leader Stephen Vickers.
The use of eye tracking as a way of interacting with devices has been explored for a number of years, says Dr Vickers.

But his project is developing a more accessible, low-cost system, which will bring games into the reach of disabled children who cannot operate a mouse or keyboard.
They will be able to "push" buttons and direct a character by looking at different points on the screen. In a spaceship game, he says players can fire a gun by staring at a button.
Eye tracking uses an infrared light to identify where the eyes are looking - and can measure the movements as the person looks around a computer screen.
If the eyes focus on an on-screen button, this can be like using a mouse and cursor to "click" on a button.
Researchers at the project at the Leicester-based University have worked with a local special school.
As well as letting children play games, it is also a way of helping children with very limited mobility to learn how to move around virtual environments, including those showing the layout of real buildings.
Dr Vickers says the growing popularity of touch screen tablet computers and the use of gesture and swiping motions on computers is part of a wider change in how people interact with computers.
If eye-tracking technology is going to become more affordable and mainstream, he says it is likely to be through the games industry.
"The characters will walk where you are looking. It's much more natural to use and enjoy. It adds a whole new level of intelligence for games," he says.
The use of eye tracking is also being developed for other types of special needs.
Researchers in the United Statesare using eye tracking to study different forms of autism among children.
It showed that children on the autistic spectrum are less likely to look into people's eyes and are more likely to look fixedly at inanimate objects or at bodies.
The eye-tracking study from the Marcus Autism Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine also found that "highly verbal children" on the autistic spectrum were more likely to look at mouths

Pirate Bay faces UK blockade

The PirateBay could be blocked in the UK following a court ruling that it illegally encourages users to infringe music copyright. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) - which represents labels including Sony, EMI, Universal and and Warner - succeeded yesterday in persuading High Court Justice Arnold that the site was breaching copyright on a massive scale.
The decision also criminalizes users of The Pirate Bay.
"In my judgment, the operators of TPB do authorise its users' infringing acts of copying and communication to the public. They go far beyond merely enabling or assisting. On any view, they 'sanction, approve and countenance' the infringements of copyright committed by its users," reads the judge's statement.
pirate bay logo

"But in my view they also purport to grant users the right to do the acts complained of. It is no defence that they openly defy the rights of the copyright owners."
ISPs BT, BSB, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, Telefonica and Virgin Media are all named as defendants.
The High Court will rule in June on whether they should be forced to block the site, as the BPI is asking.
But the decision follows a ruling by the same judge last summer that the country's biggest ISP, BT, should be forced to block pirate website Newzbin 2.
The judge said he found the Pirate Baycase 'virtually indistingushable' from that one: indeed, he added, "If anything, it is a stronger case."

Students hack school website to skip class

A group of students hacked their school website so their parents could not find out a message assuring parents that it will remain open despite snowfall. The Jewish Free School posted the message on its website after snowfall began in Harrow, in northwest London, Feb 4, Daily Mail reported Saturday.

Just to make sure they wouldn't get sent to school, the hackers are then said to have sent a fake email purporting to come from the school and telling parents that the school would be closed because of the heavy snow.
Jewish Free School

The email even provided a link to a cloned version of the school's website.

According to the Jewish Chronicle many older pupils stayed away from the school on the following Monday, owing to the success of the hack and the spreading of the fake email.

The school has identified a number of pupils it believes are behind the website's hacking and at least one pupil has been suspended.

Microsoft redesigns Windows logo

Microsoft Friday announced that it was redesigning the logo of Windows software, making a fundamental change to the iconic four-colour Windows logo users have been used to for 20 years.
Meshing with the Metro design of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8, the new logo is a slightly-angled blue block with a thin white cross in the middle, making it look like a window instead of the four-colour wavy flag in the past, reported Xinhua.

"The Windows logo is a strong and widely recognized mark but when we stepped back and analyzed it, we realized an evolution of our logo would better reflect our Metro style design principles and we also felt there was an opportunity to reconnect with some of the powerful characteristics of previous incarnations," said Microsoft in a blog post.
"We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bringing Windows back to its roots -- reimagining the Windows logo as just that -- a window," the company said.
The new logo is designed by Paula Scher from the Pentagram Design Agency, whose notable works include the Citibank logo.
The first Windows logo debuted in November 1985. Since then, the logo has gone through several redesigns, which were all based on the design of a four-color wavy flag.

Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) announces free online courses

Are you interested in learning in the world’s best University MIT? Now Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) education is not far from your reach  as MIT’s announced plans for a fully-online electronics course open to anyone in the world - and completely free.
It's aimed at helping physics students switch to electrical engineering and computer science, and is intended to be the first element of a project known as MITx, with more courses to be announced this fall. Full degrees, though, won't be available.
"We are very excited to begin MITx with this prototype class," says MIT provost L Rafael Reif. "We will use this prototype course to optimize the tools we have built by soliciting and acting on feedback from learners."
The course, titled '6.002x: Circuits and Electronics', will officially begin on March 5 and run through June 8.
Modeled on MIT’s existing 6.002 introductory course for undergraduate students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), it will be taught by Anant Agarwal, EECS professor and director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL); Chris Terman, CSAIL co-director; EECS Professor Gerald Sussman; and CSAIL Research Scientist Piotr Mitros.

The course is expected to take up about 10 hours' work each week. Students will log in at mitx.mit.edu, where they'll find a course schedule, an e-textbook for the course and a discussion board.
Each week, they'll watch video lectures and demonstrations, work with practice exercises, complete homework assignments and participate in an online interactive lab.
Students will also take exams and be able to check their grades as they progress in the course. At the end, they'll receive a free completion certificate. A 'Mastery' certificate for those good enough will cost a small fee.
"We invite you to join us for this pilot course of MITx," says Agarwal. "The 6.002x team of professors and teaching assistants is excited to work with you on the discussion forum, and we look forward to your feedback to improve the learning experience."

Popular game Angry Birds now on Facebook

Are you fond of Computer games and facebook? If you want to be on facebook and play your favourite game at same time,  then it is possible now. As promised, the mega popular casual game Angry Birds has made its way to Facebook for the first time.
The game's developer Rovio previously announced it would bring the avian-flinging adventure to the social platform just in time for Valentine's Day, and here we are. How romantic
Yes, nothing screams romance and valentines quite like oblong green pigs, so the launch date seems perfectly fitting. This isn't the first time Valentine's Day has been an important affair for Angry Birds. Rovio previously released a themed 'holiday' version of the game filled with pink backgrounds and a whole slew of little hearts.

Angry Birds has, of course, become one of the most popular casual games of all time. However, it is largely a single-player affair. Rovio could have brought it to Facebook a long time ago but it was apparently working on how to turn it into a more social experience.
Angry Birds on Facebook includes online leaderboards and special power-ups that users can buy for 99 cents a pop.
In case you've been keeping track, Angry Birds is already available for Android, the iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone, handheld game systems, and TV set-top boxes. And that doesn't even include the board game or any of the myriad other merchandising ventures.
So as for Angry Birds making its way to Facebook, the only real reaction to have is - it's about time.

Google aims to move 'whole web forward' by launching Chrome for Android mobiles

Internet search giant Google has announced that it is launching the popular Chrome Web browser for phones and tablets running its Android operating system.
Google Chrome Logo
That means Android 4.0 users can have scores of different web sites open simultaneously on their mobile phones.

Google's aim, however, is not simply to put a slightly better Internet browser on a mobile device.

The Telegraph quoted Sundar Pichai, Google's Senior Vice President for Chrome, as saying that the aim of launching the original browser was nothing less than "to move the whole web forward".
Android Logo

Pichai likened the experience to a "stack of cards" in your hand, as well as offering a new private mode that doesn't record what sites you've visited in your browsing history.

Improved integration with desktop versions mean that the browser can replicate the same tabs you have open on your main computer.

However, there remain two surprising problems for Chrome.

When Android first launched, one of its key-selling points was that it could display websites that used the Adobe Flash programming language, unlike Apple's iPhone.

Pichai said that Chrome for Android would not be able to do that.

The second issue is that, although there are now over 250 million Android devices worldwide, just one per cent of them can run Chrome, because it is only available for the latest version, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich.

Leaked photo is reportedly of iPad 3 display

A leaked picture is claiming to show what will be the much-hyped Retina Display for the next iteration of Apple's iPad.
The picture, which is being attributed to a Japanese language site, clearly shows some sort of component from Sharp, the manufacturer of Apple's new super-resolution mobile display.
The display is already being called the most significant advancement for the iPad 3, even though no official details have been announced yet.
In order to accommodate such a powerful display, though, Apple will need a more powerful backlighting system. That will reportedly force the device to be 0.7mm thicker than the super slim iPad 2. Surely for any Apple fan, though, that won't be a deterrent for owning what will be the highest-resolution tablet on the market.
As for other features, those remain a mystery but there have been some solid leads on what to expect.
For starters, it's likely to have connectivity with high-speed 4G LTE networks on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. It will also reportedly have a larger battery to accommodate for the increased technology and perhaps even give it a longer battery life than the iPad 2.
As for when we'll get an official look at the new tablet, your guess is as good as ours. We've seen reports that it would happen early February (so much for that), another one said it will actually ship in March, and another one said there were production issues. So who knows?
